 In 2009 Nico Morrison was thinking of how best to remember some of his old friends, India travellers; they were starting to die; their memories & stories were being lost. In conversation with Dave Tomory, Nico hit upon the name "The Flower Raj" to describe these generations of post WWII travellers. Nico himself travelled overland to India in 1965 & stayed there until 1970. Now retired, he once again spends much of the year in India.
The site has four separate but linked parts; a Wordpress blog; a Menalto Photo Gallery; a Mediawiki Encyclopaedia; and ArticleMS for contributors to self-publish. By August 2012 there were: 40 blog posts in 44 categories with 147 comments: 1446 gallery photographs: 60 entries in the encyclopaedia: 45 self-published articles by 27 contributors. Our aim is to generate, document & archive permanently, written, pictorial & oral histories of travellers & seekers who set out from the West, from the 1950sto the present day, to travel in India. To also record Indian & Tibetan seekers & travellers who interacted with & influenced Western culture & the Western travellers and in turn were influenced by them. To investigate the 'escapers, travellers & seekers in the land of the Gods' whose lives we want to preserve for generations to come, especially for our children & our children's children. We ask for written, photographic, audio & video contributions. We interview people using audio or video. We encourage everyone to get in touch with us & contribute. We examine the past in the light of the present; & present the now, illuminated by the past. |
