12th April 2012 & the blot-on-the-landscape 1MW hydro project is forging noisily ahead, destroying the peace & quiet & the sacred spaces of Jogini Devi Ma, tutelary/protective Goddess of Vashisht village.

The video shows the wondering beauty & tranquillity of Jogini Falls but also establishing shots of the ugly noisy hydro project building work which the villagers are protesting ("The Jogini Falls & Chhor Naala Water Millers 1MW hydro project").

As you can see from the video, work was proceeding on laying the large diameter pipe up to the head dam which would end at the upper & sacred quiet waterfall where the devi actually resides (not shown in this video).

So higher-up, inside the 'footprint' of the Goddess is sacred ground, to be undisturbed; Jogini Ma likes peace & quiet. The villagers depend on their Goddess & her tranquil shrine; several times a year certain ceremonies are held there, the most important being the afternoon of the first day of the thrre day annual mela (village festival) when the infant sons of the village are brought for their first (ritual) hair cutting.

On that afternoon most of the village proceeds to Jogini; once the ceremonial tonsuring has been completed, with offerings made & stotras (sacred verses) chanted, then, amidst happy socialising, large quantities of food, cooked by the brahmins, is comsumed, still using the flat stone plates of ancient times.

Each village God/Goddess has a 'guur'; a shaman, selected from amongst the village men; his job is to go into trance before the deity & then allow the seity to speak through him. Guurs seem always to be men; interestingly, in the case of Jogini, the shaman must while in trance, become female, as only then can she speak through the shamn; this is symbolised by the shaman putting on an embroidered woman's shawl, thus adopting a female persona.

The point of all this here is that Jogini Ma (Jogini Devi at Jogini Falls) is important to the village for preactical as well as spiritual reasons; it is also known that it is very easy to fall asleep there, so peaceful is it.
