This Maitreya Festival (8/16/09) was held at the Tibetan Buddhist Learning Center, Labsum Shedrup Ling, in Washington New Jersey, the center founded by Geshe Wangyal.

Geshe Wangyal started the festival in the USA in 1965. It is held to honor a tradition started by Geshe Wangyal's main teacher, Lama Ngawang Dorjieff, a religious assistant to the Thirteenth Dalai Lama.

Lama Dorjieff increased the practice of the Buddha's teaching in Geshe Wangyal's birthplace in Kalmykia. He started the festival there in 1905 as an annual religious event.

The people attending are sangha and monks. There are visiting monks from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery.
